Expanded Metal is produced from a solid sheet or plate of a variety of metals and metal alloys. In the expanding process, the sheet or plate is simultaneously slit and stretched longitudinally to form a regular pattern of diamond-shaped openings. No material is lost in the expanding process. The strands and knuckles of the diamond-shaped screen form an angle to the original plane of the sheet, making the final product stronger in terms of weight and lighter in terms of length than the original sheet or plate.
